Embryological Development of the Foot and Leg

Rothbarts Foot is the result of an abnormal embryological (prenatal) development within the feet.  However, to understand what is abnormal, one must first understand what is the normal.

This research was part of a series of discoveries that ultimately led to a therapy that, in many cases, permanently eliminates chronic musculoskeletal pain without the use of drugs or surgery.  This therapy is called Rothbart Proprioceptive Therapy, in which I use a series of tests, proprietary computer analyses, custom designed Rothbart Proprioceptive Insoles and ongoing monitoring to address all of the changes in the patients condition and necessary changes in prescriptions, until the chronic muscle and/or joint pain is eliminated.

Below is a  description of the normal embryological development of the leg and foot.  This information was published in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies (Rothbart, 2002).

Below is an excerpt from this published paper:

"Week 3 post fertilization (pf), the lower limb bud appears as a swelling opposite the lower lumbars.

Week 6 pf, the lower limb bud sits at right angles to the rump of the embryo.  The soles of the feet and posterior compartments of the leg and thigh are facing cephalad (upwards).

Week 8 pf, the lower limb bud has rotated 90 degrees around its longitudinal axis where the soles of the feet and the posterior surfaces of the thigh and legs are now facing one another.

Week 10pf, the thigh and legs are unwinding (rotating) around their longitudinal axes leaving the feet in supinatus."

The feet complete their fetal development during the fourth month of pregnancy.  To access this information, go to Embryological Development of the Talar Bone.
