The Silent Epidemic of Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain
In a national pain survey conducted by Ortho/McNeil (1), an estimated 50 million Americans live with chronic pain, 35 million of them with pain lasting for more than 5 years. The most common types of pain include muscle and joint pain, lower back pain and fibromyalgia.
Chronic pain has a negative impact on one’s quality of life. Chronic pain can diminish one’s ability to concentrate, work, exercise, socialize, perform daily tasks and sleep. Chronic pain can result in an unrelenting downward spiral of depression, isolation and loss of self esteem. From this, one can conclude that chronic pain represents a major problem confronting our modern culture.
In a study done by the Gallup Organization in 2000 (2) found that four out of five Americans believe that chronic pain is a natural part of aging and 65% would seek medical care only if their pain became unbearable. 60% of the respondents believe that pain is something you just have to live with. Surprisingly, 28% felt there was no solution to eliminate their chronic pain.
Uneven heel wear patterns (See Photo below) is a harbinger for the development of chronic muscle and joint pain. Much like uneven tire wear patterns which indicate a problem with the car’s alignment, uneven heel wear patterns indicate a problem with the body’s alignment (posture). And poor posture is linked to the development of chronic muscle and joint pain.
Uneven heel wear pattern is a harbinger of chronic muscle and joint pain.
In the light of this information, it becomes even more essential to spread the message that there are solutions to eliminate chronic muscle and joint pain. One of the solutions, without using drugs or performing surgery, is discussed in detail in the book, Forever Free From Chronic Pain.
